Shape the Future with a Photonics Job

Munich Technical University (TU München) is handing its Future Employer Award 2020 to SCANLAB GmbH, a ‘hidden champion’ of the laser industry headquartered in the Munich area. As Germany’s only prize created by and for students to improve the choice of employers, this IKOM award is announced annually and also serves to highlight entrepreneurial responsibility. Here, the jury focuses particularly on continuity and commitment to Germany as a business location, as well as good career and advancement opportunities for recent graduates. The award was undoubtedly influenced not only by specific arguments in favor of the employer from Puchheim, but also by the photonic industry’s innovative strength.

A good working atmosphere, healthy growth and a clear commitment to the Munich suburb of Puchheim are noticeable when entering the modern, bright, open-designed company building. The headquarters unites every department, from R&D and production to sales, and provides not only ergonomic workspaces but also a large canteen with sun terrace and a multipurpose sports court. Behind the building is even more space for future expansion. The company’s management practices the concept of ‘open doors’ and encourages all employees to take over an active role.

Lasers: Our daily companion

SCANLAB’s laser technology enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide even though few persons are familiar with the company’s name. This is primarily because its products – laser scan systems – are housed inside larger equipment and machines, thus making them virtually ‘invisible’. Yet these are the very components that transform laser beams into tools. SCANLAB’s scanners position and concentrate laser beams so precisely that they can perform operations such as cutting, welding or marking.

Many job applicants aren’t even aware how much their daily lives are impacted by products manufactured with exactly this technology. For example, the stone wash look in jeans is achieved by an especially environment-friendly laser process. Fruit and vegetables can also be gently marked directly on their skin to reduce packaging waste. Not to forget: High-tech and electronic products, such as a smartphone, on which numerous lasers were used across display, housing and electronic components manufacturing. Lasers also play a major role in electro mobility.

Pleased to accept the IKOM Award 2020, SCANLAB HR Manager Kathrin Witting states that “Part of our daily routine is to keep an eye on trends and always make sure we’re well positioned for the future. We maintain a trustful and open atmosphere and provide tailored support for each employee’s further development. We’re proud that the IKOM award has now brought public attention to our efforts.”
