TÜV SÜD accredited as Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) for Railway Systems in Canada
An Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) is a third-party, independent organization or expert entrusted with the objective evaluation of the safety of railway projects. As a core element of system assurance in the railway industry, particularly for safety-critical systems, Independent Safety Assessment provides operators, regulators and stakeholders with a high level of confidence that a system meets defined safety targets, complies with all applicable standards and regulatory requirements, and can be safely introduced into operation. The impartial assessment and independent review helps suppliers, operators and system integrators to identify and prevent errors at an early stage, thereby minimising the risks associated with complex projects.
“We have already supported many challenging railway projects all over the world,” says Luigi Lauro, Head of Global Railway Program at TÜV SÜD. “We are delighted that, following the accreditation by the Standards Council of Canada, we can now also support our customers in Canada with Independent Safety Assessments.” The ISA (Type A) holds the highest level of independence and operates separately from design, development, and operational entities, ensuring an unbiased and impartial judgement of safety compliance.
TÜV SÜD’s Independent Safety Assessments are structured along the full project lifecycle in accordance with CENELEC EN 50126, from initial concept and system definition through to operation and maintenance. In Canada, these assessments are additionally aligned with the Canadian Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CMREA), ensuring full compliance with national requirements. The CENELEC EN 5012x standards are globally recognised as benchmarks for railway safety and form the regulatory foundation for Independent Safety Assessments.
