THE REVOLUTION OF THE E-BIKE DRIVE

At Eurobike 2023, gearbox manufacturer Pinion from Denkendorf, Germany, presented a world first that is intended to revolutionize the world of e-bikes. The heart of the Pinion e-drive system is the Motor.Gearbox.Unit. The Germans rely on the expertise of Biketec GmbH from Switzerland with its FIT system for the system and the service business for specialist dealers: Two companies that transfer ideas from the automotive industry to the e-bike industry. So it’s no surprise that the two of them work together.

Pinion’s Motor.Gearbox.Unit. (MGU) is next-generation e-bike technology. The Germans have created what the industry has been waiting for for a long time – they have combined the motor and gears in one unit. They have combined a powerful electric motor with proven Pinion transmission technology and a compact 9- or 12-speed electric gearbox. In terms of weight and architecture, it can also compete with conventional middrive motors and gearboxes on the market. The Pinion MGU offers continuous gearshift and motor performance at the highest level while being troublefree, reliable and extremely lowwear.

The MGU is installed centrally and deep in the bottom bracket area. This ensures optimum weight distribution as well as a more sensitive response and thus less unsprung mass. So it’s also ideal for use in e-MTBs. Not a chain to keep the motor in check, but a belt drive for a super lightweight rear with an elegant design. What’s more, the rear derailleur cannot get offsync or tear, and the system is protected against dirt and water in a compact way. As in automotive engineering, Pinion also relies on highly efficient spur gears with two gear sets connected in succession. The MGU is available in 25 or 45 km/h versions with 9 or 12 speeds.

“We are grateful and proud to partner with Pinion and be part of something so revolutionary. We are excited to see how the market reacts to the MGU and the associated response,” says Ivica Durdevic, CEO Biketec GmbH With the Pinion MGU, the FIT system is adding another strong partner to its portfolio that is stretching boundaries with its drive. Like Pinion, Biketec GmbH also adopts approaches from the automotive industry for a coherent complete system in combination with the best partners on the market. In addition to integrating components, the FIT system relies on connectivity. Numerous digital functions are connected to and controlled by the FIT E-Bike Control app. Motor and gearbox settings can be customized for the Pinion MGU, for example. By integrating the Pinion MGU into its FIT system, Biketec also takes over the entire service business. This makes it the first port of call for specialist dealers to provide comprehensive and quick advice as well as handle warranty business. Specialist dealers can easily order spare parts from the FIT e-shop, which also acts as a central point with access to the service tools.

Pinion and Biktec are serious about each other. The collaboration is intended to sustainably develop the mobility industry and revolutionize the market with a new generation of e-bikes.
