Rheinmetall delivers weapon system for British RCH 155 wheeled howitzer
The RCH 155 wheeled howitzer is a product of ARTEC GmbH, which is procured by both Germany and the United Kingdom. ARTEC is a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland, whose shareholders act as subcontractors.
In May 2026, the UK placed an order for 72 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers. Both countries are currently qualifying the 155 mm L/52 RC (remote-controlled) weapon system. Upon verification, Rheinmetall will supply 72 elevating masses and on-board tools. Additional non-recurring services will also be provided, such as support in preparing training materials and technical documentation. The weapon systems will be manufactured at Rheinmetall’s new gun production facility in Telford, which is being taken into operation step wise.
The RCH 155 combines the proven drive module of the GTK BOXER wheeled armoured vehicle with an enhanced, fully automated version of the weapon system used in the self-propelled Panzer howitzer 2000. It thus combines automated artillery firepower with a high level of protection and excellent wheeled mobility. Its ability to fire whilst moving is particularly notable, making it one of the most advanced systems of its kind. The wheeled artillery system features an unmanned, fully automated turret.
In the field of 155 mm weapon systems, Rheinmetall is not only one of the leading system houses but also one of the world’s largest ammunition manufacturers. The company is currently expanding its production capacity significantly.
