In 2005, after thirty years, I gave up my marketing profession and left the agency to my junior partner. However, I soon realised that I had no special skills apart from marketing. So I turned my passion for collecting into a profession. After launching "1000 Objects", a website and shop in downtown Zurich, I bought several important collections, including part of Maurizio Albarelli, the owner of Seguso, Cenedese and Vistosi, and part of Pauly’s sample room in Venice. Is Murano glass suitable as an investment?
Murano glass is very popular and is the most collected glass product in the world. With its striking colors and shapes, it stands out from the crowd, and because of the handwork, no two pieces are completely alike. Still, there are differences when it comes to collector value. Vases made after 1975 are not a good value investment. They are too similar and there are comparatively many of them made. While some of these items may not survive the next few years (even Murano glass is fragile), it is unlikely that they will increase in value very much.
