TÜV SÜD supports transition to ISO 8100-1/2

The new standards harmonize safety and design requirements for passenger and freight elevators worldwide. ISO 8100-1 contains specifications for the design and installation of elevators, while ISO 8100-2 deals with the calculation, testing, and documentation of elevator components. Both standards are also published in a European version as EN ISO 8100-1 and EN ISO 8100-2, which are identical in content. Publication is planned for March 1, 2026.. In the European Union, the standards will only become valid and harmonized after publication in the Official Journal of the EU, which will take place approximately six months later.

“The new standards are not only more comprehensive, but also contain significantly more precise requirements,” says Jonas Conrady, International Manager Certification in the Lifts, Cranes and Conveyors business unit at TÜV SÜD. “Manufacturers must analyze and update their products, processes, and documentation, which is a challenge despite the three-year transition period.” Valid certificates based on EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 must also be adapted to the new requirements and reissued. This may also mean that manufacturers have to submit further documentation or carry out additional tests.

TÜV SÜD ReCert Easy for a smooth transition

According to TÜV SÜD, manufacturers should promptly address the new requirements and prepare specifically for the changeover. “As a Notified Body, we not only take care of issuing new certificates, but also of reissuing existing certificates,” explains the TÜV SÜD expert. “With TÜV SÜD ReCert Easy, we have developed a new service that is designed to ensure the smoothest possible transition and make the issuance of certificates as easy as possible.” In order to optimize the organizational effort required by manufacturers for the entire transition and conformity process, the service also includes the transfer of certificates from other Notified Bodies to TÜV SÜD:

Manufacturers should not underestimate the effort involved in switching to the new standards. A look at some of the most significant content changes illustrates this: 

• New specifications for vertically and horizontally moving doors and for measures to prevent finger and hand injuries.
• Approval of new load-bearing devices beyond traditional steel cables.
• New requirements for automatic emergency release after a power failure.
• Replacement of the PESSRAL concept with SIL-rated safety circuits.
• First-time consideration of digital safety risks – keyword: Cyber Security.
• Regulation of building requirements in a separate appendix.
• Restructuring of documentation, including new requirements for declarations of conformity, risk analyses, and operating instructions.

“Manufacturers should address the new requirements at an early stage,” advises Jonas Conrady. “The changeover also offers an opportunity to review and optimize the entire conformity process, thereby securing important competitive advantages.”
