A Study in Motion – Smartphones and Wearables in Stroke Rehabilitation
The Sensor-S study demonstrates how data from sensors, wearables, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can be integrated within a scalable digital research infrastructure. The result is a blueprint for data-driven, patient-centered rehabilitation—developed using D4L Collect. 1. The challenge Rehabilitation is more than physiotherapy. In early stroke rehabilitation, clinicians often observe declining motivation over time. At the same time, progress frequently lacks transparency: assessments rely on subjective impressions rather than objective longitudinal data, and complications may only be detected at a late stage. We, the stakeholders of this joint statement, welcome the Regulation on the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and commend the TEHDAS2 Joint Action for its sustained effort to translate this framework into operational guidance, and to ensure its outputs are relevant, balanced and practical. The EHDS represents a unique opportunity to transform how health data are used for research, innovation and public health across Europe. However, access to data alone will not be sufficient. The success of the EHDS should ultimately be measured by its ability to generate meaningful evidence across borders. Data4Life, a nonprofit digital health organization, has opened the first call of its new research support initiative: D4L Impact Track: Collect for Impact. The program supports early-career researchers running digital studies with real-world health data.
