Immer wieder werden unkonventionelle Methoden ausprobiert, um Uran zu fördern. Zu den Verfahren, die (noch) nicht industriell eingesetzt werden, gehören die Urangewinnung aus Phosphatgestein, Braunkohle, Schwarzschiefer oder aus dem Meerwasser. In Australien wurde nun mithilfe von Neodym ein Material hergestellt, das Uran auf effektive Weise aus dem Wasser holen kann. Laut Schätzungen sollen sich 4,5 Milliarden Tonnen Uran in den Meeren befinden. Das Problem bei der Urangewinnung aus den Meeren ist, dass das Uran stark verdünnt vorliegt.
