Lithium – in hot demand

For a long time, most lithium was produced by three major producers. But new producers have joined the ranks.

The big three in the lithium industry were, or are, Albemarle, Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile and FMC. They are still responsible for a large part of the coveted raw material for electromobility and electricity storage, but a lot of the metal also comes from China. About eight kilograms of lithium are built into a mid-size car. Lithium can be mined from rock, or it is extracted from underground salars (salt lakes).  In 2022, almost half of global lithium demand came from Australia’s open-pit mines, about 35 percent came from South America’s salars and about 15 percent from China.

The extraction of lithium from open pit mines involves blasting and drilling. The pieces then undergo chemical and metallurgical processes so that the lithium is separated from the overburden. Highly concentrated lithium from salars is found in the countries of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile ("lithium triangle"). There, the brine is transported upwards into large basins and evaporates. After up to two years, the lithium carbonate is extracted by filtering and chemical processes. Since lithium is an indispensable component of energy storage systems and the prices for lithium have gone up, there are also companies in Europe that operate mining projects and want to take care of the lithium supply. The projects are operated in open pit and underground mining.

In Nevada, Century Lithiumhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/century-lithium-corp/ – is working on its Clayton Valley Lithium Project. The test pilot phase is already underway, and the feasibility study and necessary permitting are progressing.

But the development of new technologies in the field of lithium anodes and lithium metal is also progressing thanks to companies like Li-Metalhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/li-metal-corp/ -. The goal is the cost-effective and sustainable production of these products. A pilot plant operated by Li-Metal in New York is already working successfully.
