Solar and wind energy are growing enormously – lithium provides storage

Last year, the expansion of renewable energies reached a record level worldwide. Lithium-ion batteries are used to store the energy.

According to the International Energy Agency, renewable energies will replace coal and be the most important source of electricity as early as 2025. Nevertheless, the pace still needs to be stepped up to make the goals of the World Climate Conference a reality. In 2023, new green electricity plants were built at a rate of more than 50 percent. Around three quarters of this came from solar power plants. Record figures were achieved in China, the USA, Brazil and Europe. Solar modules have roughly halved in price in 2023. This means that solar and wind power plants can contribute to the climate transition almost everywhere more cheaply than new fossil fuel-based electricity suppliers. Another record: in 2023, for the first time in Germany, more than 50% of electricity was generated from renewable energy sources. A further increase to 80, then 100 percent is planned.

In the automotive sector, the question of whether electric cars are really more climate-friendly has long been debated. With the increasing share of renewable energies, electric cars are also becoming more climate friendly. After 90,000 kilometers at the latest, the carbon footprint of electric cars should beat that of combustion engines. In order to replace fossil fuels in the long term, materials such as cobalt, copper and lithium are required in increasing quantities. Although recycling is working well for copper, there is still a long way to go for lithium. Companies such as Century Lithium and Gama Explorations have lithium in their projects and will be able to provide supplies.

Century Lithiumhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/century-lithium-corp/ – is well positioned with its Clayton Valley lithium project in Nevada, which is already in the test phase.

Gama Explorationshttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/gama-explorations-inc/ – has projects in Quebec and the Northwest Territories. They contain lithium as well as nickel and copper.
